Without Fear, There Is No Courage.

The short of it

  • Courage only exists where fear is present. Take away the fear and all that's left is comfort.
  • God told Joshua to be strong and courageous three times, at the edge of the biggest moment of his life.
  • Fear isn't a sign to stop. It's the sign you've reached something worth your courage.

Without fear, there is no courage. Courage isn't a trait some people are born with and others lack. It's a response, and it only shows up when something real is on the line.

Fear is where courage begins

Think about the moments people call brave: the first business, the hard conversation, the leap into something new. None of them felt safe at the time. What made them courageous was never the absence of fear. It was the decision to go anyway.

Take the fear away and nothing about the moment requires courage. That's why the most meaningful things in your life will almost always come with fear attached. The fear is often the proof that you've reached something worth it.

Why God told Joshua three times

Joshua stood at that kind of edge. Moses, the only leader Israel had ever known, was gone, and Joshua was now responsible for leading an entire nation across the Jordan into a land they had been promised but never held. In one chapter, God gives him the same charge three times: "Be strong and courageous" (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9). You don't tell someone to be courageous unless there's something to be courageous about.

Notice what God doesn't say. He never promises the fear will leave or the crossing will be easy. He promises His presence: "As I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not fail you nor forsake you" (Joshua 1:5). Courage was never meant to come from feeling fearless. It comes from knowing who goes with you.

And Joshua moves. He has the officers tell the people to prepare food, because within three days they will cross the Jordan (Joshua 1:10-11). The fear was real. So was the step.

The move

Pick the one thing in front of you that stirs the most fear right now: the launch, the conversation, the leap you keep circling. Don't read that fear as a reason to wait. Read it as the sign that this is exactly where your courage is needed, and take the first real step today.

The Foundation

“Haven't I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid. Don't be dismayed, for Yahweh your God is with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9
